Description

Our Vintage Yoruba Textiles come to us from Nigeria, where they were handmade by the Yoruba people following centuries of tradition. Also known as aso-oke cloth, these one-of-a-kind textiles were customarily used as ceremonial garments and were reserved for weddings, coronations, holidays and other special occasions. Due to their size, the pieces in our collection were likely worn as wraps or loincloths by their original owners. A craft passed down through the generations, the process began with locally-grown, hand-dyed cotton, which was carefully woven into strips of fabric on small wooden looms. These individual strips would then be sewn together to create a larger piece of cloth and embroidered with unique, vibrant designs that each possessed their own symbolic meaning and cultural significance — a sort of visual language. A beautiful example of Africa’s rich textile tradition, they’re a great way to add a layer of history and global style to a vignette.
