James Gallagher uses collage as a means to ask questions and explore ideas. The Brooklyn-based artist creates his works from hand-cut paper, which he sources from obscure old books and discarded magazines, as well as other found materials. Working slowly and thoughtfully, he pieces these fragments together until his enigmatic forms and figures emerge. We first discovered Gallagher’s work in Paris and were instantly struck by the stark composition, neutral hues and varied textures that make up each quietly mysteriously piece. A true one-of-a-kind original, the Still Life Collage #2 is displayed in a sleek black shadowbox frame and finished with an attached hanging wire for easy display. ABOUT THE ARTIST 
James Gallagher’s work has hung in galleries around the world and he has curated international collage exhibitions in New York City, Berlin and Cork County, Ireland. His art has appeared in publications such as The Yale Review, The Paris Review, Juxtapoz and The New York Times, as well as the HBO docuseries Sex Diaries. Gallagher is also the co-editor of Gestalten’s Cutting Edges: The Art of Contemporary Collage and was the publisher, editor and creative director of the contemporary art magazine Secret Behavior. He earned a BFA from The School of Visual Arts in New York City, where he currently resides with his wife and three children.
