Sold as a pair, these beautiful solid pine Utö Chairs are an exceptionally treasured vintage find. Designed in the 1930s by Axel Einar Hjorth as part of his ‘Sportstugemöbler’ (weekend cottage or lodge furniture) collection for Nordiska Kompaniet, the models in the beloved series are regarded by many as Axel Einar Hjorth's masterpieces. Crafted for the weekend cottages that were gaining popularity in Sweden at the time, each series is lovingly named after a Swedish island.
Axel Einar Hjorth (Swedish, 1888 - 1959) was a Swedish furniture designer, and the chief architect at Nordiska Kompaniet, a high-end department store in Stockholm, from 1927-1938. His visionary designs, marked by a creative interpretation of classical themes, laid the foundation for a design ethos embraced by a new generation of architects and designers. His legacy became an integral part of the Modernism movement in Sweden and contributed significantly to the burgeoning Swedish design culture's international recognition in the 1920s.
